TAXATION FIGURES COMPARED
Speaking at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce luncheon on the subject of taxation, tbe secretary (Dr E. P. Neale) said the statement had been made in the New Zealand press of late that New Zealand is the most heavily taxed country in the world, the figures for the Dominion being £l2 os Od per bed. Such a statement cannot he substantiated, and none of the newspaper editors whom lie bad challenged on the snbject had been able satisfactorily to quote chapter and verse. As a matter i of fact, strictly comparable international figures under this head could scarcely 1m? quoted, owinpj to vary in 2 fields of activity for State and local governments as between different countries. Australians, however, appeared to b? more heavily taxed on the average than New Zealenders, tfie latest figures for Australian State and Commonwealth taxation being almost exactlv £l3 per head, or 15s per head more than New Zealand. The Tasmanian figure was as high as £ls 6s per head, and the Victorian figure (the lowest in Australia! ws only Is per bead below that of New Zealand,
