It will be open for six mouths.
SETTLEMENT REJECTED. BRISBANE, July 20
A ballot taken by sugar mill strikers at South Johnson resulted in the rejection of the proposed terms of settlement by 3111 votes to 23. Tbe I nion officials urged the men to accept the terms, hut the strikers main objection was that there was no provision made for the dismissal of volunteer labourers, although the owners agreed to employ all the men employed last yeal'j al.-ii to re-employ cane cutter- who went on strike.

A suspension ol business by the ( ivi’f Engineering Coy. will mean that 1500 men will he thrown out ol employment. The reason for suspension, which is recommended to begin at the end oi the existing contracts, is the unreasonable claims made by unionists.
RIXGTXG-IX CHARGES. SYDNEY, .July ’2O. At the Central Police Court. AAilliain Muttcrson, and Walter McCarthy were charged with conspiring together to cheat mid defraud Richmond Trotting Cub and New South Wales, Victorian and West Australian Trotting Associations of large sums ol money. It was alleged a. trotting marc*registered in Australia as Gathered Gold, was identical with a New Zealand mare Promenade. Two raoiim officials identified the horse as the one nominated by Matterson in the name of Gathered Gold. A detective gnve evidence that when he interviewed McCarthy at Auckland, the latter told him lie had sold Promenade to his brother-in-law. that the horse had died and he had purchased Gathered Gold from Matterson and run it in Victoria and AYest Australia and then sold the horse for £SO.
