SETTLEMENT REJECTED. BRISBANE, July 20

A ballot taken by sugar mill strikers at South Johnson resulted in the rejection of the proposed terms of settlement by 3111 votes to 23. It was alleged a. trotting marc*registered in Australia as Gathered Gold, was identical with a New Zealand mare Promenade. Two raoiim officials identified the horse as the one nominated by Matterson in the name of Gathered Gold. A detective gnve evidence that when he interviewed McCarthy at Auckland, the latter told him lie had sold Promenade to his brother-in-law. that the horse had died and he had purchased Gathered Gold from Matterson and run it in Victoria and AYest Australia and then sold the horse for £SO.
