On a wicket by no means easy, the earlier New Zealand batsmen with the exception of Blunt failed to get going, and it was left to him to swing the game in New Zealand’s favour. He was responsible for 90 out of the first 191, but they took him 2:’ hours to get and the scoring at this stage was certainly not fast. Blunt was especially strong on drives and to leg, ; i some of his strokes being brilliant. There were, however, only seven fours in his fine total. Lowry and Page gave Blunt some assistance hut no real stand was made till seven wickets had fallen for 231. Allcott then joined Alills and the pair set up a determined resistance. Once the home total was passed they played a forcing game and delighted the small crowd by their vigorous batting. At the tea adjournment the score had reached 329. Alills then being 57 and Allcott GO. Up to this Allcott had scored much faster than his partner. but on resuming both kept up an even rate of scoring and passed the century practically together. Lowry then declared the innings at 7 for 4*21. Alills and Allcott put on 190. the former being 21 hours for bis unfinished 104 and the latter 100 minutes for 102 also unfinished. Alills hit ten fours and Allcott thirteen. Civil Service had a. few minutes batting and scored 28 without loss before stumps were drawn for the day.
