A report to the Minister of Internal Affairs from the keeper of the Itrothers Lighthouse, Air Hooper, will lie pleasing to those interested in the tun tare, lizard. “Since coming here early in the year,” says Air Hooper, “ I have made a number of visits at night to the few accessible places on the island. One evening, with the aid of an electric i’amp. I counted no fewer than fifteen lizards. A pleasing feature is that the majority were small, half-grown ones. By the .side of one of the larger ones was a half-eaten weta. I think weta is the tuatara’s main article of food here. 1 was at the island in lOTA and never remember counting more than seven lizards at any one time during three months. I am convinced that they are increasing. As far as I am able to teli there are no enemies of the tuatara here, with the possible exception of the harrier hawk, which visits the island in large numliors for three months of the year. In February, while doing some excavation work, we found two tuatara eggs in a hole made by one of the numerous dove petrels that frequent the island. T consider that with care the tuatara should continue to increase. I might mention that I have never seen such far go specimens of the tuatara here as T did on Stephen’s Island, while I was there.”
