The misfortunes of a farmer who had recently had power installed on his farm were related by the engineer of the Thames VaVlev Power Bead, Mr X. (1. .McLeod. He said the man had the top of a linger taken oif by his electric pump, and shortly afterwards his son. who was playing with a radiator, pulled out the switch and severely burned his lingers. Then a leak livened a pipe in the farmer's milking-shed, and a eow standing on the pipe was killed. The Board was liable for the cost ol the cow, which was valued at CIO.
The first annual conference ol the New Zealand Liberal Party will be held in Wellington on Tuesday. August 2. when representatives wii'l be present from all parts of tlie Dominion. Some misconception appears to exist regarding the effeet of legislation passed last year reducing the age limits for eiiiulidates for junior and senior national scholarships. It was explained by the Director of Education (.Mr T. li. Strong) at Wellington on Tuesday that those who are concerned needed to know that- those i-liaiiges would not apply until the 19*28 examinations. “ Ki»r the exiiniiliations for junior scholarship!! ol November next.’ added M.r Stt'ong. The Crimes Amendment Act, 1927, introduced by the Leader of the Opposition. deals with the rights of the Crown and of accused persons in standing down anil challenging jurors. I nder the present law the prosecutor has the light to direct any number of jurors not peremptorily challenged hv either party to stand down until all the jurors have been called. An accused person may lie called on to declare whether he challenges any juror peremptorily or otherwise before the prosecutor is called on to declare whether he desires that particular juror to stand aside or challenges him. This amending Jiill proposes to deprive the Crown Prosecutor of these privileges. The Bill will take the place of the Juries Act Amendment Bill, which .Mr Holland had intended to introduce.
Several instances of motor-cars having been appropriated by unauthorised people, have occurred in Creyniouth during the past few weeks. Recently, Mr J. W. Creenslade (Mayor of CJrevmouth i whose ear was parked outside his office in Mackay street, became suspicious when he hard the ear engine running. On making investigations he surprised two would-be joyriders who were making hurried preparations for an evening excursion. The men who. according to Mr Greensi'ade's description, appeared to he ship's firemen. made their escape in the direction of the wharf. On Sunday night a twoseater ear was removed from the parking place outside the Creyniouth Opera House. The car was located on Tuesday | afternoon in a bv-roail at Paroa. AVliile a Chevrolet car driven by Mr. Newman was proceeding along the mad near Kokiri yesterday, ihe vehicle collided with a .stray cow. the animal being’ badly injured. and the car disabled as the result of the accident. The owner of the cow could not be located, but it is understood that the animal would have to be destroyed. 'lhe radiator of the car was severely damaged, and the engine also affected.
