A survey of prohibition activities during the year just ended has revealed a paradox. .More persons, boats and automobiles were seized, but actually less liquor was captured than in the preceding year. Arrests numbered 80,000, which is a record, being 90.000 above the previous year. Two million live hundred thousand gallons of liquor was seized, only a small percentage of which was genuine importation. The sentence on convicted persons averaged 110 (lavs gaoi' and lot) dollars was the average fine. Several large liquor rings were broken up, but others were formed to replace them. Illicit stills appared to be increasing, also home brewing and wine making, but smuggling, except Canadian, had been sharply curtailed.

The newly-organised Academy of
Motion Pictures and Arts at Hollywood the production of a threereel film in which many stars will participate and the proceeds from which will constitute a relief fund for the purpose of the erection and endowment of a home for aged, destitute screen players. The Academy hopes to raise a million dollars with the picture. The cast will he chosen by lot, thereby removing any chance of professional jealousy. All services will he contributed free.
