(Australian & X.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, July 7. In the House of Commons, M F. A. MacQuisten (Argyll) moved to reduce the duty on whisky from 72s (id to 30s. This, he said, would permit whisky to he sold at (is per bottle, instead of 12s fid which would mean three times the eonsumptio n. The motion .was rejected without a division. in the House of Commons, Sir Cooper Rawson’s amendment to increase the preference granted to Empire brandy from half a crown to ten shillings, was opposed by the AttorneyGeneral, Sir D. Hogg, and was negatived without a division being taken.
In the House of Commons, in committee on the Finance Bill, Mr Dalton moved a motion to repeal the sugar duties. Mr Hannan urged that the output of the British refineries shoui’d enjoy an Empire preferential duty. Mr K. Mc-Xeil reported that it would cost the country eleven and a-half million pounds a year to repeal these duties. The motion was rejected by 21 fi to 128.
