The wicket was thoroughly saturated and lifeless, hut Lowry and Mills, by watching Rhodes most carefully, managed to offer some sort of a defence fot a considerable time. At one period they were twenty minutes in getting six. .Mills lasted altogether for 50. minutes and then fell to a brilliant catch by Douglas at square leg. He was missed at the wicket when 24 and eventually was caught on the boundary after hitting five fours. Tlie others made a poor fist of Rhodes’ left-hand breaks. The attendance was verv small.
