In an interview with one " well connected with the dairying industry and keenly interested in its welfare.” a, representative of the " .Uonnwatu Standard ” learned that there was great “ economic waste going on in the Dominion.” This was to be seen in too many manufacturing and collectin" plants for cream and milk. The ” Standard ” was informed that •• within a radius of about twenty miles of Palmerston North there are no less than t’ti dairy factories (11 butter and lo cheese), besides a large dried milk factory.

With butter factories competing for supplies, no one factory is filled to capacity; too many collecting lorries are running, and expenses of management are duplicated. Moreover, proprietary lorries arc “ rutting in ” to still further lessen butterfat returns. All are securing a certain amount of business, but none sufficient to return the maximum to individual suppliers.
