The Federal Arbitration Court today deliverd tin award, which operates for six months from July 17th. covering the engineering and Macksmithing trade in all the States, with the exception of Queensland and West Australia. A number of employers, incluring the Hail way Commissioners in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. are exempted from the operation of the Award under a special provision.

The award provides for the adoption of piece work, and it fixes the hours of work at 44 per week. This week is to bo paid for at the same rates as the IS hours' week.

Tn delivering the judgment. Judge Beeb.v made reference to the question of payment by results. He said that if the employees approached this question reasonably, they would help to increase production, and would do something to compensate for the increased cost of the 44 hours’ week, therefore he had introduced a clause i" the award which would permit of eon tracks for other than ordinary wages, and had provided in the award that the individual employers could choose either a daily or a weekly system of hiring.
