BIBLE-IX-SCHOOLS. WELLINGTON, June 22. Discussion upon access by representatives of the Bible-in-Schools League to school registers took place at today’s meeting of the Wellington Education Board, when Mr J. J. Clark gave notice to move the revision of the following resolution passed h.v the Board last January: “That bead teachers throughout the education district of Wellington be requested to afford accredited representatives of the Bible-in-Schools League facilities for extracting from the school admission registers the names and addresses of parents of scholars attending their respective schools, in order that thereby a plebescite of parents may be taken in relation to the question of religious instruction as embodied in the lleligious Exercises in Schools Bill introduced into Parliament last session.” The motion for revision was lost by eight votes to three. OTAGO UNIVERSITY DEFICIT. DUNEDIN. June 22.

The report of the treasurer of the Otago University shows a deficit for the year of £3360. The actual debt on the -Medical School was £4272. The treasurer comments that, with the Council unwilling to adopt a system of estimates at the beginning of the year, and acceding to fresh demands during the year, the debit next year, without further assistance might well be £SOOO. The treasurer further points out that adequate assistance from the Government should l>c forthcoming for recognised national schools, quoting the Commissioner’s statement as follows:—“It is obviously unfair that the needs of a national school should he supplied in part from funds required for the maintenance of a local college with which it happens to he connected.”
