A hockey match was played on Cass Square on Wednesday afternoon between Hokitika ladies and a team from the Grey mouth Stars. Hokitika won easily by seven goals to nil, the scorers being Miss (). Stapleton (four goals) and Miss Olson (three goals). At Greymouth the same afternoon, M.awliera defeated United by nine goals to nil.

the Supreme* Court at Blenheim on I uesdav and Wednesday presented a rather strange appearalvce owing to the fact that neither his Honor nor counsel wore the traditional wigs and gowns. It appears that at the conclusion ol the Nelson sittings of the Court Mr Justice MacGregor's wig and gowns were inadvertently forwarded direct to Wellington, and on arrival in Blenheim liis Honor found himself bereft of these ancient emblems of the dignity and wisdom of the Bench, llis Honor kept himself in countenance by requesting counsel not to robe, lienee the court's unusual appearance.
A Wellington correspondent states—The seven year appointments of seven members of the Legislative Council expire in tlie course of the session. Six of these expire on Saturday next. June 2oth, two days after the opening of Puilinnieut, while the seventh appointment rims out on October lith. This Government is deferring its announcement concerning the lii'ling of the
vacancies until the appointments actually expire, hut it is understood that all of the Councillors who are due to retire will he reappointed. 'lhey are the lion. Mr Clark, the Hon. Mr Cohen, the I lon. Mr Karnhsaw, the lion. Sir Edwin Mitchelson, the lion. .Mr Scott, and the Hon. Mr Smith. The seventh retirement due ill October is that of the Hon. Sir William Halldo lies.
The death took place at Westland Hospital yesterday morning of Mr Michael David Dell at the age of 5G years, lie had been in very poor health for a number of yeais. He was a native of Ross, and in his younger days followed the printing trade, and afterwards followed milling pursuits at Westbrook. For about eight years be was clerk in the Government Water Race offices at Kumara. lie leaves a widow and four daughters. Misses Margaret, Emily. Molly, and Kate; and three sons, David, William and Richard, besides a sister, Mrs J. Le Comptc, of Christchurch (who is at present on the Coast), and a brother Mr R. C. Dell, of Kumara. The family will have the sympathy of many friends.
The iirebolls rang out an alarm shortly after midnight, the Sale Street hell being the first to sound. The scene of the outbreak was the bungalow residence of Mr Theo Lynch in Sale Street. When discovered bv Mr l ynch the flames were getting a good hold at the hack door, but the near vicinity of the fire station and hell enabled a prompt alarm, to be given and a reel was run down the bill to tho scene of the outbreak, water being played on to the fire in very smart time, with the result that the outbreak was beaten in very quick
time. The fire broke out in a corner of the building at the back door on the outside and ran up the wall to the roof breaking through the wall to the kitchen, and was caught just in time to avert a serious disaster. Mr and Mrs Lynch were in bed at the time and the awakening of their bahv at the time proved a very lucky incident, enabling the fire to be discovered. and the alarm promptly given. The damage done beyond where the woodwork was charred from floor to ceiling for four or live feet, was from smoke and water.

Furness, liefore proceeding with the usual business of the evening a vote of sympathy .and condolence to a brother’s wife and family in their recent sad bereavement was passed. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, outward correspondence read and approved, inward read and received. Thirds reported sick members doing fairly well. Sick pay to the amount of £5 ss, Grand Lodge dues £ I!) 1 Is (id and further accounts to the amount of £!) 13s 3d were passed for payment. A ballot was taken for two new members which proved successful. The ordinary huisness was then suspended for the purposes of initiating four new members, which was impressively done by A.l). Hro. K. Furness assisted by bis officers. The ordinary business of the evening being resumed three new members were proposed. J.P.A. Hro. R. Ferguson also notified members that a
challenge would soon he forthcoming for th<‘ ritual competitions shield and advised members to get busy and not be caught napping if they wished to retain the shield. The half yearly balance sheet was then read by the Grand Lodge representative which proved to be in a very healthy condition as regards finance. The balance sheet as read was adopted by a unanimous vote of the Lodge. It also was decided to hold the annual’ hall on Wednesday, 10th August, the prices to he as usual. Visitors to the different lodges in No. 13 District reported that they had a good time at the installations. P.D.P. Hro. Fox then gave an interesting address on the inner workings of the Grand Lodge, and the formal workings of Druidism. The Lodge then closed in harmony.

Tho hospital ball in the Public Hall Kokntghi, on Wednesday evening attracted a* very large attendance, visitors being present from all parts of tho district. The lair sex were present in specially large numbers. Capita! music was supplied by Messrs l?oss Bros, orchestra and the floor proved in capital order. An excellent supper was provided and dancing "as kept up to an early hour, the gathering proving a very successful one.
The Grey “Argus” reports:—Two male patients of tho Grey River Hospital were found to have suddenly disappeared 1 rom the institution yesteiday morning. A search ol the town was made, and one of iliom was soon accounted’for. The other man was discovered later walking along the Dobson road, evidently with tho intention of going to his home in Blackball. Both men, who were still attired in their pyjamas, were removed to the hospital, and had apparently suffered no iil effects as the result of their strange conduct.
