The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Robinson took pi'aee yesterday, the cortege leaving the residence for St. Paul's Methodist Church, where a service was conducted by the Rev. Kuowles-Smith, the remains being then taken to Stillwater Cemetery, where the interment took place.

The Hon. (). J. Hawkon (Minister of Agriculture) stated on Tuesday at M cllington that it is the intention of the Department of Agriculture to enforce strictly the regulations having lor their object the prevention of the introduction ol plant disease into the Dominion.

The steamer Maori, which is completing her annual overhaul at Port Chalmers, will’ resume running in the ferry service from Lyttelton on June 28. The Wahinc will withdraw for overhaul on her arrival at Lyttelton on the morning of June 28, The overhaul is expected to occupy about a fortnight. The Waliine then will resume. and she and the Maori will take up their usual running in the ierry service.

Christchurch papers record the death in Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday, of Charles Stratford, a well-known figure in the sporting eonununity. He was a prominent jockey in the eighties and nineties of last century. For several years past lie had been employed by Cults Bros., the well-known Riccarton trainers. He remained with them until a few weeks ago, when he went into the Hospital. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family. Deceased was well known on Coast racecourses in his earlier days. Last, week a house in Wellington was broken into and some money and tram tickets were stolen, after which the house was set on fire. The owner of the house notified the tramway authorities and information about the missing tickets was passed on to conductors. On Tuesday morning a conductor of a city-bound suburban car noticed a passenger bearing a ticket whose number corresponded with that of one of the missing tickets, and he informed a constable. who was also on the tram, of his discovery. The man walked oft the tram quieti'y in the constable’s company, but had gone only a few yards when suddenly he ran off. The constable immediately pursued him and although the man went out of sight round a corner, lie was recaptured within a few minutes hiding in a doorway in Brandon Street. He was taken to the police station and will he charged with breaking, entering and theft.
While an Essex car was proceeding
along the road near the Tunnel', between Brunner and Stillwater, about I p.m. yesterday, the machine suddenly became unmanageable, and dashed over a precipitous hank of the flrey River, falling a hundred feet before it finally settled at the water’s edge. The occupants of the car, Messrs E. Brooks and Rhodes, representatives- of Messrs A. and T. Burt, of Christchurch, had a miraculous escape from serious injury. As the far fell it rolled over and over, the occupants being thrown out as it turned about for the third time. The hank is very steep at this point. Mr Brooks, who was driving the car at the time, was badly bruised about the libs, and Mr Rhodes suffered from shock. Their injuries were attended to by Dr Violet Rains (Brunner). and later they received treatment at the Grey Yali'ey Hospital.
