FOOLISH WOMAN AND ADVENTURER
WELLINGTON, June 22. Magistrate RuTdell heard a ease, wherein .Tack Lindsay McMillan described as an advertising agent was sued by a young woman, a domestic servant for the recovery of C7<>, money allegedly lent to defendant. Plaintiff said siie first met defendant as the result of an advertisement tor a. wife. He described himself as a journalist working for a Wellington paper and shortly after making her acquaintance borrowed £lO from hei, afterwards getting her to sign a receipt indicating he had paid the money back. Other amounts were borrowed later, defendant having promised to marry her. The defence was that the £lO was paid back. Replying to counsel, lie defendant said lie was in the literary department of the Dominion for seven years. He yarned the {money, for business reasons and they veic going to lie married. Counsel: But you haven't married her. Why haven't you:-' Defendant: Oh. well t can’t because I’m married. I've been married six months. Counsel informed the Magistrate that defendant was never a member of the literary staff but was a telephone attendant. The Magistrate: The girl has ken rather foolishly trusting. While defendant's action showed he had been nothing more or less than an ad\enturer. pure and simple who was out to get as much as he could out of her. The only difficulty was to the amount, that judgment should he given for, but he would tix it at t'oO.
