Reports from the country indicate that some of the opossum trappers are meeting with very fair success. In eluding in the catch this season are said to be a number of weasels. Whiteaway, of Eelthani Lodge, Middlesex, and Goldie, daughter of the Hev. Canon and .Mrs Walter Bean, St. Mary’s Vicarage, Addington. The wedding will take place in London early in September.
A fisherman who was out in the roadstead yesterday off Ruatapii reports the sea was fairly alive with shoals of small fish about an inch long heading south. There were millions of them, hut tin? actual species is not known. The sea was also full of sprats and there were numberless kawhai in amongst them making a harvest, the seafowl also being in great, evidence. The Returned Soldiers’ Euchre Tournament will he. continued on Friday. While a car owned fiv Mr Southani, of Stillwater, was proceeding along the Kaiata Road yesterday morning, ttic vehicle suddenly caught fire. The hood and body were destroyed before the flames could he extinguished, hut the chassis was undamaged. The vehicle was later conveyed to a garage for repairs. It is understood that the fire was due to a defective carhurretor. The car. a Rugby model, was covered fiv insurance.
The death took pi'.ice in Wellington last Saturday morning of .Mr James Keenan, formerly of Kimti .and for many years a coach-driver when the
regular coach service used to operate tetweon Rimu and Hokitika. The deceased was resident in Wellington for a number of years, and was in the employ of tile Railway Department. He leaves a widow and three children to mourn their loss, and besides three brothers (two of Rimu and one of Woodstock) and one married sister in Millington. To the bereaved the sympathy of the community is extended. Ihe funeral tool; place al Wellington on Alonduv.

At the conclusion of the meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society held at the County Chambers last evening, the whole rf the whitebait fishermen who attended the meeting for the purpose of discussing matters in eon, 'lection with the whitebait industry with the • Society, formed themselves into an organised body to he called the est.i',l nd Whitebait Fishermen’s Association. The aims and objects of the Association are to assist the industry and gain information in the way of research. Mr H. T. Parry was unanimously elected President, Mr D. Dowell A ice-President, .Mr 0. Howe Secretary, and a committee of A. Appleton, j. Kelly. T. Spoor, A. Cutbush. F. Newman, A. Howe and H. Stapleton. The fee for memhership was fixed at 2s 6d. The Association is to meet on the first Wednesday of every month. It was resolved to send a letter of condolence to the Fisheries Department in connection with the death of the late Mr Arson. This concluded the business of the evening and the meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman.
