THIRD-GRADE School 7 heat Excelsiors 6.

KANIERI v. MAGPIES.

This : game between tho two “bird’ teams was played on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon. 'The weather was line and ground in good, order, hut a cold easterly made it unpleasant for spectators. Kanieri won by 19 points to 3.

The game was an uninteresting one fo watch and was noticeable for the very weak handling of both sides, the hacks losing opportunity after opportunity by faulty handling. The tackling generally was very sound, hut Ivau.icri’s full hack made a very amateur attempt at tackling when a Magpie'back broke through in tho second spoil and made him look very foolish. The best solo effort of the day, perhaps was a good dribble by Dougherty, who took the hall along at his feet to score mi his own a good try under the posts. The game went up and down, the field, I In' Magpies having the better of the opening play. In tho first spell Kanieri scored a penalty goal kicked by Thomas and a goal from a try scored by Slopforth and converted by Thomas io a try h.v Dowell, scored just on lialf-

In the second half E. Pfalilert. C Bi n lilci t and Dougherty scored trios, olio being converted by Thomas, bringing tho tally lo 19 to 3 when time finished a somewhat disappointing exhibit i o 11 . Mr Williamson was referee.

EXCELSIORS v. STARS. Excelsiors senior team met Stars at the Victoria Park on Saturday, the imuteh resulting in a win for tho visiing team by 8 points to 3. Excelsior’s lino was not crossed throughout the contest, the three points against them being secured by a penalty kick. The visitors’ tally was made up with two tries, one being converted. The teams ! were well matched, and the game was j fast and open. A good standard of football was maintained by both sides, hut the match was marred by the strong southerly wind, which swept across the ground, making effective kicking and passing very difficult, especially for the £earn playing from the northern oiul. Excelsiors proved a good all-round lot, their victory being due iu no small measure to the sound defeme maintained by Nightingale, Houston and Tainui. Hahn and Freitas wore outstanding in the forward pack. Devane,v and Gugieli accounted for most of the scrums and Tainui could always he relied upon to give a good pass, .and set things going for his side. Hahn accounted for the first try, which was well deserved, especially in view of two fine efforts to score, which ho had previously made. The try was converted by J. King, who also played a sterling game. Freitas secured the second try, a moment before the final bell. Stars maintained the good form displayed at their previous match, and. but for some remarkably good individual play by their opponents might have kept their lino intact. Coodii.ll and Nicholson invariably gave a. good account of themsolves whenever danger threatened Culling, as wing, was responsible for some good lino kicking, and was always handy to receive a pass. Stevens, whose good kicking secured the three points for Stars played good football throughout ns did also Reynolds, Thomas and MdKcndrv, Caulton and Fell, in the forward pack, wero also worthy of special mention.
