The death of Mrs A. 11. Carey, of Cowper Street, Greymouth, took place early on Saturday morning, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband, Mr A. H. Carey, Manager of the Greymouth branch of the Bank ol New Zealand, and two daughters.

Afr Seddon. M.P. has been invited to open tine new hall at Harihari to-night hv the settlers, and in consequence his departure for Wellington will be delayed till Thursday. Some members of the County •Council also invited to the function, left for Harihari this afternoon.

With regard to the condition of the roadmen’s houses in South Westland, Afr Seddon AI.P. has been advised in reply to a communication on the subject, that the Almister of Public Works is having the matter looked into, and a. special report is to be submitted for the Minister’s information.

The death occurred at 8 o’clock on Saturday evening, after an illness last_ ing a fortnight, of Airs Bessie Coen, wife of Air John Coen, of Preston Hoad, Greymouth. The deceased, who was forty years of ago, leaves two daughters, while she is also survived by her mother, Airs Alerriek, of Preston Road.

At the Alagistrate’s Court Ibis morning before Air AY. Jeffries, J.P., flic police charged George Casey and Thomas Timmins, two recent arrivals in the district, with theft of £o 14s. the property of William Jones, of South Hokitika. A remand was asked for. and granted until AVednesday morning, when the charges will ho heard by the Stipendiary Magistrate. The alleged offence took place on Friday evening at the hut of Jones, tho men being arrested on Saturday.

A wooden outbuilding at the rear of tho Alain State School. Tainui Street, Greymouth, was practically destroyed by lire on Saturday altornoon. The fire hell at the Central Station rang about three o'clock and the Brigade turned out in good time, and was soon on the scene of the outbreak, the flames being extinguished within n few minutes. Among the contents was a lawn mower, the wooden handle of which was burnt off. The total damage is estimated at approximately £3O.

During the week end Air 11. Vatkinson, District Engineer, visited Hokitika, and conferred with the County authorities relative to the allocation of the quota for AA'estland in regard to prlblic works grants for 1927-28. The amount available was about £8.700 and a. suggested allocation scheme was <lraw in up to 'absorb the full amount, preference of course being given to the works considered most urgent throughout the district.

The Grey “Star” reports that tho site of the old Presbyterian Sunday School in Guinness Street, Greymouth, which was recently sold for £I,OOO. will he utilised by the purchasers, Tooheys Afotors, of Hokitika, for tluereetion of a modernly-equipped garage. It is also rumoured that the representatives of two other motor transport companies, Newman’s and Gibbs’ are negotiating for garage sites at Greymouth, and that one of them will he' located on Boundary Road, where some old buildings were demolished recently.

A motor car conveying a football team to ltos.s on Saturday afternoon was overturned at the bottom of the hill before entering Kanieri township, as the result of a narrow escape from a collision with the lvanieri-Hokitilca Sawmill Coy’s engine. The engine gave warning of its approach out of the cutting from the hills as the car was just about to cross the tramline and in the endeavour to get across out on the wav, the car swerved off the sill: of the road and capsized into the blackberries growing alongside. Luckily the passengers escaped unhurt, but the car was considerably damaged, and it was necessary to obtain another car to take the players on to Ross. The engine pulled up very quickly, with such suddenness in fact that some of the trucks it was hauling were derailed by the sudden jerk.

Following on a seizure about a week ago, the death occurred rather unexpectedly on Friday night at Wellington of Mr L. I'\ Ayson, late Ins|>ector of Fisheries. Tlio deceased was exceedingly well-known throughout the Dominion. lie was born in Otago in 1855, and was a sou of Mr I’elcr Ayson. He was educated at various Otago public schools, and later entered upon fanning pursuits. At an early period he took a deep interest in fisheries, subsequently joining the Government service as curator of trout hatcheries. He made several trips to America on liehalf of the Government in connection with the development of the New Zealand hatcheries. He also represented the Government during extensive trawling operations on the Nora Niven off the New Zealand coast and Chatham Islands. Several months ago he retired from the service.
