'•’lie Government lias recognised the seriousness of the unemployment position by extending the period of restriction of immigration, and it may ho expected promptly to quicken its endeavour .to provide employment for those "ho need it and are willing to accept the opportunity of working at reasonable rates. The opinion was expressed at. the Mayor’s conference that work should ho found for 2o() additional men, and it was suggested that this number might be absorbed bv means of a more energetic prosecution of certain necessary and contemplated public undertakings. The. Government has a freer hand in expending public money than local bodies enjoy, and it need not fear the disapproval of the taxpayers in doing its best to relievo the present industrial difficulty on reasonable lines.—“Otago Daily Times.”
