Petrol-driven pumps for filling the large tanks from which railway locomotives draw their water supply are gradually being replaced, on .South Island lines, by electrical installations. One of these new pumps is being provided at Alcana (West Coast), others have been approved for Ashburton and Rangiora, and eventually a similar installation will go in at Rakaia. The railway pump at Horn--1)y was recently connected with the Lake Coleridge power.
A AY Islington correspondent savs there were scenes of wild enthusiasm at, Paderewski’s opening recital on Thursday night. The Town Hull was packed. The programme included gems from the works of Beethoven. Schumann. Bach. Chopin. Liszt and Paderewski's own compositions. Her Excellency Lady Alice Eergussmi and suite attended. The great pianist received an ovation at his first appearance and was cheered loudly at the i :m< lusion of each selection. His wonderful artistry was as evident as ever. At the conclusion of the eoncert the members of the huge audience rase to their feet and cheered, and great crowd cheered again as i’aderewski left the hall to enter his ear.
