SHORT CUT TO THE COAST

SIX HOURS TO RKEETON. CHRISTCHURCH, June 9. The prospects of escaping in visits to Christchurch a journey that now occupier part of the two days, was one in which Professor Mall, in his botanic expedition to tho West Coast and Nelson, recently found residents north of Reef ton intensely interested. Describing the scheme in his address last evening to the Philosophical Institute, the professor said only 26 miles of road remained to put into condition for motor travel, and the journey from Reefton to Christchurch would occupy hut six hours. The route would from the East Coast, ho from the Waiau ferry—past Hnnmer—to the Poplars, over the Boyle river to Lewis Pass, and through to Manila Springs. It was an interesting journey. besides being short, and the unformed portion was lietween the Springs and Poplars. He had seen ears at the Poplars on his expedition. “The people are keen to see the route completed, and so eliminate a long and nasty journey.” said Professor Wall. The professor remarked that Murchison. one of tho townships that would benefit, was a progressive place, and seemed to have better prospects than many of the larger West Coast towns, such as Westport. Reefton. and even Grevmouth.
