A meeting of the Hokitika Poultry Club will be held in the Soldiers’ Hall on Saturday evening at 7.30 o'clock.
The opossum season in Westland County opens on Saturday. Already a number of trappers from other parts have arrived here. The season should lie a lair one, the opossums being in good condition generally.
The movement for the revival of the Poultry Show in Hokitika is now taking definite shape, and it is likely that the Show will be bold the first week in August, following the annual Show at Greymouth about that time.
The monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society takes place tit 7.3.) o’clock to-night. The much debated question of trout versus whitebait is the principal subject on the older paper, there being a considerable amount of correspondence to go before the meeting.
The death occurred yesterday morning at his residence Main Hoad, of -'ft William Wootton, a very old and respected resident of Blackball. The deceased, who was (17 years of age, was formerly in business as a carter, but bad retired some years ago. He is survived by a widow and a grown-up lamilv.
The Returned' Soldiers’ Km lire Tournament will be continued in the Soldiers Hall next Friday, June Bth, at S o’clock sharp, when the following valuable prizes will be for competition: First prize, 32-piece dinner set; second. 10-12 coloured Alhambra quilt; third, half dozen w. and g. clips and saucers, ball dozen bread and butter plates ; fourth, glass salad howl. The death occurred in the Westport Hospital of Mrs 11. Kitson. wfunvCof the late Patrick Kitson, who for many years edited and managed the
“Charleston Herald.” Mrs Kitson was a native of County Kerry. Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand ill 18i7, when eighteen year: of age. In ISifi she married her laic husband al Ross, and removed to Charleston. She was lhe mother of seven children, who all predeceased her.
An incipient lire was discovered about 1.30 p.m. yesterday in the residence of Mrs T. Baxter, in Fralikiyii Street, (iicyinoutli, a rafter supporting the rout of one of the upper storey rooms having lioromi* ignited from a candle left burning earlier in the day by some workmen who bad been in the room. The central fireball gave an alarm, but a couple of buckets of water served to put out the fire, which had been extinguished by (lie time the Fire Brigade arrived. There was very little damage done.
The Hokitika Borough Council sat in committee, last evening for a couple of hours, going into the financial position with a view to overhauling receipts and expenditure. Several matters were dealt with and will come before the Council for final confirmation on Friday night, in the form of a report. One decision Lo lie acted on meantime, was to call for applications for a temporary Town Clerk at Co per week. The Magistrate who lias just begun to preside over the sittings of the Hastings Court, Mr A. M. Mowleni, gave the members of the legal fraternity a surprise when lie refused to allow solicitor’s costs on a judgment summons order. Mr M owlem said that there was no uniformity in regard to fees in judgment summons eases, hut lie had ascertained the altitude of such Magistrates as Messrs Page. Cut ton. Hunt, Widd owson, Bartholomew, Moslev and others. It was their practice not to allow counsel's costs against judgment debtors, unless in special circumstances where, for instance, it was known that a. debtor had the money and would not pay until a warignt was issued. In these eases, costs were all right, hut where an order for monthly payments was held over the head of a debtor, then he would not allow costs. Tie added that he did not wish to prevent a solicitor from earning every shilling he could, hut he intended to carry on as lie had sta rtod.
