UUTTER AND CHEESE

Statistics and Census Department it is gathered that tlie dairy industry was responsible lor providing the Dominion with exports valued at Cld.osG.B7o, made tip of butter £'8,695,180. cheese £5.939,359, casein £106.25, dried milk £309.791. and preserved mill; £35.278. The quantity of butter exported timing the year was 1,168,01U0wt, and of this quantity 1.130,037 were taken by the British Empire and only 38,003 cwt bv foreign countries, and yet it can be said that New Zealand butter gets a wide distribution. Thirteen countries within the the Kmprie know something about our butter, tlthough the exports to some of the places is very small. The foiled Kingdom took 1.062.275ewT, leaving only (!7.759cwt to be taken by the other twelve countries. After the United ICingdom. Australia was our best market, for the Commonwealth took 31,945c\vt valued at £289,153. then fame Canada, with 29. lO.’h-wt. valued at £230,562. The exports to other countries were very small. The Straits Settlements look 2,253 cwt value £*18.071. Western Samoa I2lcwf. value C 1.039; Tonga 2'dewt, value £2,650; (long Kong lOOewt. value £1,613: Fiji, IfUcwt. value .£1,740; Ceylon, SOewt, value £217 ; British Xorth Borneo, 'lOewt. value C 144; India. Sewt. value £80; and Solomon fslands, 3ewt. value £34. Last year New Zealand butter was exported to eight foreign countries, the quantity being 55.0030 wt and the value £297.7i(>. The United States was the principal buyer of our butter, taking 22.0dSewt, valued at £172.593; then came Hawaii, with 9.206 cwt, value £77,300; Japan l,BS6ewt. value £11.923: Pliillinino Tslands. 1 .flo.'icwt. value £13.836; Dutch Hast, Lidies, 269 cu t. value £10,283; China, soOcwt. value £6.0.51; Society Islands, 269 cwt, value C 2.761 ; and Xcw Caledonia 3cwt. value £29. Our butter appears to have a very wide distribution and it is doubtful whether more markets can be found lor it. Instead of wasting efforts in endeavouring to lind new market; it would be more advantageous to try and stimulate consumption in the countries to which out* blitter already is sent. The exports of butter last year from Auckland were 728,51 Sewt, valued at £5.471.030. from Wellington 201,143cwf, value £1,926.396. from Lyttelton 32,22t>cwt. value £211.957, from Dunedin 21,1 Ssewf, value £154,983, anil from other ports 121 .00-ewt. value £900,213. The average -value is equal to nearly 119 s per ewt.
The qimnliu of cheese exported last year was 1,-161,548cwt. but of ibis quantity 1,15ti,037cwt went to tbe United Kingdom, leaving a balance o! 11,511 ewt. which was shipped to nine different countries. Australia look 9,555 cwt, valued at (M1»,475, the United States 1,065 cwt, valued at £1,598; Fiji, 21Scwt, valued at £1,033; Western Samoa 35ewt, valued at £210; Tonga 18ewt, valued at £108; Norfolk Island, Sewt. value £35 ; Society islands sewt, value £32, and Japan took just it pound's worth ol cheese. Wellington was the principal centre lot* the export of cheese, the quantity shipped last year 1 icing 770.183cwL, valued at £3,168.392; Auckland came next with 220,571 cwt, valued at £929.738. The exports from Lyttelton amounted to only 25,H76cwt, worth £101.031. and Dunedin 33,584 cwt valued at £132,360. From other ports there was shipped 111,331 cwt, worth £1,601.928. The Xorth Island has a monopoly of the dairy industry, and the exportable output of butter and cheese is very much greater than from the South Island. In addition to butter and cheese, New Zealand exports powdered, dried, condensed and preserve milk, but the figures of these products are small. The exports of dried full cream powdered milk amounted to 4,249,5621 b, valued at £222,956, and of this quantity 4,237.0781 b went to tbe United Kingdom. The only foreign country to take ibis product was Hawaii and 2,0101 b, valued at £275, was exported to that island. Auckland has a monopoly of this business, the exports from that port last year being 3,373,7801 b, and from Wellington 875,8721 b. The quantity of dried milk exported wm 5.350.2921 b, valued at £80,838, and of this product also tbe United Kingdom took tbe major portion with 5,470,224lb, Australia took 217,2481 b, the Straits Settlements 51,5611 b, France 44,3001 b, Hawaii 31.8761 b, and tbe United States 12,C0f)lb. Auckland bolds a, monopoly of this trade also, the exports from there totalling 5,639,0921 b, while the figures for Wellington arc 11.2091 b. The exports of preserved and condensed milk other than dried wore valued at £35,278. Australia took the bulk of this product with 1,092.0121 b, Fiji 64,6251 b, the Society Islands 31,9311 b, Western Samoa 22.9061 b, Tonga 8,7061 b, Solomon Islands 1,2451 b, Norfolk Island 45011), New Hebrides 481 b. New Zealand dairy produce is fairly well distributed, and our best market appears to be the United States, especially for butter.
