WARNING TO LICENSEES. WELLINGTON, June 0.
Recent prosecutions against bookmakers who carried on their business in city hotels, were referred to at the annual meeting of the Wellington District Licensing Committee to-day. ‘‘The police report shows that during the last quarter, bookmakers were convicted for doing business in three hotels, and the barmen in three hotels were fined for bookmaking,” remarked the chairman, Mr W. G. Riddell. ‘‘There is not sufficient evidence to show that hookmaking was carried on with the knowledge of the licensees, but it is obvious that if hookmaking i-s carried on in any hotel, there must be lack of proper supervision, and it will be well for the licensees concerned to see the practice is prevented so far as possible in their hotels. If proof can be brought that Tiook-making is carried on knowingly, they render themselves liable, under the Gaming Act. The offence is regarded hy the committee with disfavour and will certainly handicap the licensee’s future applications.”
