NEW HALL AT WATAROA

Fl-CCKSSFEL OPENING CEREMONY The township oi Mataimii was oil fete on Thursday night for the opening of the new hall erected by t,he settlers for community purposes. There was a gathering of settlers from all parts ol the district, a licet of motor ears being necessary to transport the lolk from south us well as north. The attendance was set down at 250. and was one of the largest gatherings ot its kind seen in Wataroa. Ross’ Orchestra from Hokitika was engaged specially for the occasion to supply the music, and the local patrons enjoyed greatly the stirring numbers for the dancing, and encores were frequent and free. About 9 o’clock the formal opening ceremony of the hall was performed. Mr Thomas Mcßride was Chairman and spoke of the good work done in organising the committee for the building of the ball. Mr T. E. 1 . Setldon, M.P., was called on to officially open the hall, which he did in a very happy speech Other speakers included Air Murdoch, County Chairman. Air AY. 11. Chinn, AI.C'.C., and ATr T. R. Chestcrmnn, AI.C.C., all of whom congratulated the community on the reside of the splendid organisation whic h produced so lino a hall. Special reference was made to the faithful work of the builder, Air Casey, who also spoke. Liberal refreshments wore served during the night by the committee ot ladies and gentlemen who attended to every want of the visitors. Dancing went on vigorously all through the night, many old dances being revived to the pleasure and delight of patrons. The whole arrangements were most complete, and reflected all possible credit on those concerned. Nothing appeared to be- wanting, ami the ladies and gentlemen connected with the movement were to he congratulated on the pronounced success attending the very successful function to mark the opening of the fine commodious ball which should serve every want of tfie people.
