[by TELEGRAPH —-PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] LIQUOR AT RESTAURANT. AUCKLAND, June 1. Peter Ulrich pleaded guilty this morning to two charges of selling liquor without h license. Evidence was given that Ulrich had conducted a restaurant in Hobson Street for the past seven years. Since Easter circumstances had pointed to a good deal of sly-grogging in the vicinity of Hobson Street. On May 21 and May 27 beer was sold to a constable. As a. result, the premises were raided last Friday night, when a quantity of liquor was seized. Since April 13, Ulrich received from wholesalers 31 dozen of beer. He was fined £2O on each charge. The liquor was ordered to be forfeited and sold. £IOO FOR LIBEL. WELLINGTON, June 2. A libel action in which Ada Francis Walker claimed £IOOO damages from Andrew Phillips, licensee of the Royal Hotel, Westport, anil his wife, Olive Phillips, was concluded to-day before Justice McGregor and a jury. The plaintiff claimed that her moral character had been defamed in letters she alleged were written by the defendant Olive Phillips. The jury awarded plaintiff £IOO and judgment was entered accordingly.
N.Z. ALLIANCE DEMANDS. ' DUNEDIN. June 2. The annual meeting of delegates of the Otago area to the Convention of the N.Z. Alliance was held to-day, and a programme of work for the present national prohibition campaign was discussed, nnd Mr Edmond (General Secretary) gave an outline of the political situation as affecting the twoissue ballot and triennial poll. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “ That this meeting of the Otago delegates to the annual Convention of the N.Z. Alliance respectfully requests Parliament to provide a ballot paper on the liquor question containing only the two issues of national prohibition and continuance, so that the will of the people may he ascertained in a truly democratic manner. This-meeting records its emphatic opposition to any proposal that would increase the period of time hetween the polls, and urges Parliament to preserve to the electors their present right exercised through the triennial poll. In the evening an address on “The World Outlook” was given by Mr Malton Murray (editor of the “ Vanguard ”).
