The New Zealand hurdler Cherry Ripe, when tooled down after a brilliant exhibition of jumping in the hurdle trial displayed signs of soreness. One of his forelegs lias since given his trainer some trouble and it is doubtful if the horse will be able tr start in the Australian Jockey Club hurdle race on Monday.
.IMPRISONMENT EOR LIFE. BRISBANE. June 2. Edward Stanley Moran (as cabled on 22nd April) has been found guilty of murder and sentenced to imprisonment fur life. PRESS UNION’S REPORT. MELBOURNE, June 2. In tlie- annual report to the Australian section of the Empire Press Union Sir James Fairfax said although a .substantial reduction had been made in the full ordinary rate for cable messages. the press had not shared the reduction. Further efforts were, however, to lie made in this direction, and it was hoped that the press, as the largest users of the cable service, would be allowed to share in the concession already granted to the commercial community. Mr Campbell Jones referred to the necessity of linking up by wireless with Australia, of all British possessions. A resolution was carried that the Federal Government should be urged to take action in this direction. CONSTABLE ARRESTED. PERTH. June 2. The arrest has been effected of Constable Ryan in connection with the
murder of the natives.
