THEFT FROM SAFE. DANNEVIRKE, June 2. The police have been called upon again to exercise their powers of detection in respect to another burglary, this lime at Arcadia Picture Theatre. On the office safe being opened,, it was lon ml that .Monday night’s takings and petty cash totalling in all', about £2O, had been abstracted from the safe. The .supposition is that the keys were found mi I used for opening the office and sale, some time during yesterday aft' lie-a, and then thrown into the apar..uent, where they wore discovered.
TRAINER FOUND DEAD. OTAKI. June 2. Thomas Higgins, owner-trainer, of Masterton. as found dead in a lavatory at the racecourse this morning. APPEAL FOR PROBATION. CHRISTCHURCH, June 2. When Nancy Hastings Carr, who was found guilty of the theft of LTBD2 and appeared for sentence today. Counsel made an appeal for probation. on the grounds of the girl’s general good character. Judge Adams remanded her till Monday to consider the question.

The Consolidated Fund, it is estimated, has now benefitted by 91199 as a result of a raid on the promises of Alfred Vivian AYliitla, bookmaker, and the prosecution of the clients. Three more of the latter appeared to-day being fined £9 in aIJ.
APPEAL DISMISSED. AUCKLAND, June 2
'The Chief Justice dismissed an appeal by Doctor Raynor, managing director of Dixieland, against conviction on a charge of allowing liquor to he consumed in a cabaret. Chief Justice Skerrctt said although Dr Raynor was not present on the night referred to in the charge, he bad acquiesced in and consented to impliedly authorised the kind of business conducted in the cabaret.

INQUEST VERDICT. .MAGISTRATE’S SERIOUS CHARGE. AUCKLAND. June 2. At iho inquest on Doris Jane Reid, aged 2.9 years, found dead in a boardinghouse at Newmarket on May 12th, Dr Murray said death was caused by general peritonitis following on septic abortion, caused by external interference. The evidence disclosed that the deceased had a till with her father about her going out with Hugh Glover, a married man. The boardinghouse keeper deposed that deceased stayed at her house as .Miss Wilson. Witness had seen her drinking brandy and gin.
Hugh Glover admitted having kept company with the deceased but only as friends.
Mr Hunt, S.M. : I don't believe you. There's no man in New Zealand wotibl believe you. J will return an open verdict, given as medical evidence. That will leave things so the Senior Detective can make further inquiries. Addressing Glover, Mr Hunt said. “ Well, the death of the girl is at your door.”
JUDGE’S COMMENT. AUCKLAND. June 2. Justice flerdman sentenced duck Johnston (28) and Frank Bailer f‘24) to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for breaking, entering and theft and declared them habitual criminals; and Herbert Cooper to twelve months’ imprisonment on one ehaige of theft. He complimented the police on their success in bringing the prisoners to justice. His Honour said accused had helped materially to the belief that crime was particularly pievalcnt in Auckland, hut considering the extent of the Auckland Police District lie did not think there was anything to he alarmed about. Housebreaking bad been prevalent lately, but this was only a passing circumstance. If. added the judge, those responsible for the investigations of crime are supported intelligently and svinpathetically from other quarters, there will he little to fear.
