The weekly euchre of the B.S.A. takes place to-night at the Soldiers’ Hull instead of to-morrow evening, when the building will be engaged otherwise. There is a fine range of prizes on offer to-night, being the first playing night in the month, some eight prizes are to he competed for.
At tho Kokatahi Winter .Show a display- of fancy work was on view by Miss !). I.earmont. and attracted much attention. As a desire was expressed for u more extended view of the interesting exhibits, the articles have been brought into town and were on show at Mr Yarrall’s shop. Rovell St. to-day, attracting considerable interest and attention.
J. Foster, a railway surfaceman at Waiinaunga, was accidentally shot- oil Sunday, while out deer-stalking with a companion named Harris. lie was bringing in the carcase of a deer when Foster fell ami the rifle lie was carrying went off, the bullet entering the sole of his hoot and coming out higher up. Ho was conveyed to the Reefton Hospital.
The death of Mr Patrick Daniel O’Reilly took place at the Old People’s Home at (treymouth on Tuesday, at the age of 91 years. Deceased, who was a native of County Louth, Ireland, wont to sea at the age of 13, and during the early gold rush days arrived on the West Coast where he was engaged ill mining. Ife had worked on all the West Coast fields during the past AO vears.
Apropos the discussion proceed in respect to the preservation of
whitebait industry, the Grey District Acclimatisation S-ciety has suggested that the season for taking whitebait should he for a period not exceeding two months in each year, from loth. Hept ember to loth. November. The Grey Society is asking the co-opera-tion of the Westland Society in this matter, and the subject will come up at the meeting next Thursday evening.

Word having been received that Air P. O’Connor, a farmer, of Tutaki, was missing since Saturday, a search party went out on Monday and found the body of the missing man. lying face up, about 160 yards away from his home. It is believed that death was due to heart failure. Deceased was a married man, with five of a family. He took part in the South African war and also the Great AVer.—Tnangaliua “Times.”

There was a considerable amount of controversy at the Arahura Snleyards on ATonday in regard to two fat bullocks which were, penned, as to which would kill the heaviest. To-day there is on view in Afessrs AV. Berry and Son’s butchery, one of the oareases. a very fine sample of a South Westland product. It was from the holding of Afr T. A. Condon, of Tatare, and weighed 8921b5. a Shorthorn. ATr Berry had estimated the weight previously at 8851bs. while some of the estimates ran to over OOOIbs. The other bullock, grown by Air Norman Friend, of Alatainui. is to he killed on Saturday, and it will then ho weighed and the opinions as to the heavier will he decided.

An inquest was held to-day before the District Coroner (Air 1). J. Evans) touching the death of Lorraine R. Boner, who died at Koiterangi on Tuesday. The evidence of Dr Baird showed that tho cause of death was acute intestinal obstruction. Deceased was in town on Friday last and was in normal health. He became unwell on .Monday with abdominal pains, but improved in the evening. Death however overtook him during the night, bis end being very sudden and unexpected.
The Hartley and Riley Consolidated Gold Dredging Coinpav Ltd., the prospectus of which has been filed with the Registrar of Companies. Auckland, is now on the market for subscription. The capital is £7/5,0U0 divided into 1.500,000 one shilling shares with the minimum subscription -100 shares or £2O a month. Already many thousand shares have been applied for and Air H .Maxwell the organising director was in Hokitika on AVedncsday and arranged with Alcssrs A\ . Jeffries and Co. to act as local agents for the flotation from whom all information as to reports, prospectus and application forms may be obtained. It is hoped to place 10,000 shares in this district. The dredge about to be erected will be the largest and most powerful in the world.
