TROUT V. WHITEBAIT.
(To tho Editor.) Sir, —The report from the export which you publish strongly confirms the opinion that trout .are a menace to whitebait. All tiiat is asked is that in consideration of the importance of the industry the local Society should retrain from introducing fish, whether trout or salmon, for the season and meantime make a full investigation of this important problem. By so doing it would justify its existence and earn th*. thanks of the community. It would not lose anything financially as the fees from trout fishing produced only £33 last season and of the £9OO or so which the Society holds, most of this came from royalties from opossum skins.
It would be a proper thing for tho Society to spend some of this maintaining tracks for the opossum hunters or otherwise assisting the industry, and also in extending tourist facilities, which is a part of the Society’s functions. Mr Hope in a recent article says, speaking of whitebait: “ From the economic point of view its value far outweighs its advantage ns a trout food. As n national asset it is of the utmost importance to the whole community and for that reason alone steps should he taken to protect it in some manner before it goes the way of the Huia.” GEORGE PERRY.
