THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
F.i-rr.OTS Ok Anglo-Uussian Rupture
Though the rupture between Rus and Britain affects, in the first instance. only the two countries concerned, it is certain to produce important indirect effects elsewhere. First the French, and then the American newspapers, have welcomed the raid on Soviet House, and the threatened expulsion of the Bolshevik-emis-saries from Britain as a step in the right direction. How is it possible, asks the Washington “Post.” for any country or government to remain on terms of formal courtesy with a State which by its policy and its methods deliberately places itself outside the pale of civlisation ? The New York “Times” considers that Air Baldwin’s action will vastly strengthen the Aloderale party in Russia, and will induce Stalin to break away altogether from the Third International, with its extreme Bolshevik programme. However, this may ho, the leading American papers seem generally to agree that it will be- now impossible for their own Government to patch, up any sort of working compromise with Russia. —Northern Paper.
