ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES

WELLINGTON. May 24. The recommendations of the Representation Commission have been gazetted. The nett result is that the total number of European electorates remains unaltered, but the distribution is changed. The disappearance of Ashburton, in the South, and Ohincmuri electorates in the North have been compensated for by the creation of two new electorates in the North, so that the North Island now has 47 seats and South Island 29 seats. The old Taranaki Electorate has been amended, portions of the Eastern and Southern districts being addeea to Stratford and Egmoht electorates respectively, while in the North. Wai-

tara and a part of the rural area of Waitomo electorate have been added to the Taranaki electorate., which is now named New Plymouth. In the South the old electorate of Wakalipu disappears, being merged in the newly-named Otago Central electorate. This is subject to adjustment with the Wallace. Mataura. and AVaitaki districts.

Ashburton becomes incorporated in Ellesmere and Tornuka. The only electorates that arc to escape a change are those of Marsdon, Gisborne, Napier, Wanganui, Westland, Lyttelton, 1 imam, and Invercargill. The two new electorates are:—Firstly Auckland South, including portions of the Suburban areas of Auckland and adjacent rural constituencies; and, secondly, Mercer, which includes, Otahumu, i’apatoetoe, lTawick, and Mercer Town districts and portions of the Franklin, Manukau, Waikato and ITauraki Plains counties.

All the other electorates are subject to changes hut these are too intricate for description here. Objections to alterations will he reecierd up to the 27th of dune for the North Island, and to the 28th of June for the (south Island. WELLINGTON, May 21. The Hon O. J. llawken (Minister of Agric idtiire) said to-day: “It will be noticed that the Hon. W. Nosworthy, Postmaster-General, who has represented the Ashburton district for 18 years, has under the new distribution of the electorate lost liis electorate. I" feel quit* certain that there are many, apart from the electors in this district, who will regret to see that the electorate has been cut oui.
