Ihe Alayor referred to the recent death nl Mr H. A. Thompson, a former member of the Council for a number ol years. Ihe deceased was an esteemed and valuable member and he deeply r lied his untimely death. A general discussion took place on the necessity of attention to roads and footpaths in various parts ol the t’livn. From F. Front Westland County Council, in reference to gravel reserves mi the road to Alunieipal Itndovinem. Koiterangi. and recommending all exchange ol areas in which there is good gravel.— Received. The Council to assist in every possible way. From AA\ Connor applying for leave of absence.--Received ; referred to Abattoir Committee to enquire into. From G. Appleton applying for connect ion with the water supply.—Received: to be attended to. PUBLIC WORKS REPORT.

The Public AA'ork.s Committee met oil Wednesday. 13th. inst. and inspected the area at Park and Ben ley Streets that have been causing considerable damage l > same residents by llooding. To overcome the difficulty the Committee recommend*.

1. (a) That, the culvert in Park St. be pulled up and tilled in. (1)1 That the road bo raised by about S inches between the culvert and Hall Street.

(e) That the drains in the swamp area lie cleaned out.

Received. A lengthy discussion took place as to the best means of improving the present unsatisfactory conditions in the vicinity of Park and Boa ley Streets. Clause 1 being referred to Overseer for consideration; clause 2 was adopted, (Tau.se 3 was deferred and clause I approved. Clause (a) was approved. RESERVES COMMITTEE.

The Committee reported :—(1.) That Cr Evans had been elected Chairman; (2) that the applications of Basket Ball Club and Ladies' Hockey Club bad been approved, tbe Sub-lnion to arrange with the Clubs lor suitable playing days; (3) that it recommended the Council to call applications for a mail for three days a week, the Beautifying Association to bear one third of the cost, for necessary workin the upkeep of Cass Square and Maeandrew Square, which have gut into a dilapidated condition; (4) that the pavilion on Cass Square receive the necessary attention and the front of the building be wire netted, to prevent the bird nuisance, at present veiv considerable; (5) that the blackberries on the old road to cemetery hill lie cut and it he made available for foot traffic; that tbe cemetery bill road be repaired, the use of the grader being suggested, and that wncu the road is put in order the sexton he instructed to keen the water tallies in order; that application he made to Dr Buchanan for assistance in carrying out repairs.—Received. Clauses 1 and 2 were approved, clause .'1 was amended to read that tenders he invited for the work, under the supervision of the Overseer. Clauses I and 5 were adopted. The Treasurer '.reported receipts £192 3s 7d. payments £1 Id 13s 6d. credit balance £562 4s sd, loan account credit £ll7 7s Id.— Received.

Accounts amounting to £382 Os 8d were passed for payment. In connection with the Reserves Committee’s report. Mr defines raised a discussion by referring to the frees planted on Cass Square a year ago. Some bad come on wonderfully well, but a number bad missed mainly due to vandalism. He urged that steps In- taken to replace those lost and that every effort he made to preserve those planted. A lengthy discussion took place, the matter being referred to flic Reserves Committee with * view to replenishment, it being mentioned that the good services ol the Conservator of Forests would be availabb.'. A suggestion that the voting trees be protected hv stakes, and that the good services of the Rector and school staff be appealed for. with a view to the scholars utilising Arbor Day Tin- the purpose, and securing their assistance in the protection of the plants. The meeting then terminated at 8.45 p.m.
