MAGISTRATE’S COURT

THURSDAY, MAY 26th. (Before W. Aleldrum, Esq., S.-M.) LICENSING ACT. On charges of being on licensed premises unlawfully alter hours convictions Mere recorded:— Two residents (Oeiideutal Hotel). One fined 2Us and costs l()s, the other to pay costs IDs.

'Two residents (Dunedin Hotel). Ordered to pay costs 10s each. The police charged William Hall (licensee of Dunedin Hotel) and Florence Hall on charges of selling and supplying liquor during prohibited hours. Air Alurdocli for defendants pleaded guilty to one charge each and the others were withdrawn. The licensee was fined £2 and costs 10s and I’. Hall £1 and costs 10s.

The police chagred .Johanna Boyd (licensee of Occidental Hotel) with selling liquor, and keeping open loir sale, a liter hours. No appearance. Fined £2 and costs 10s on one charge.

A DEFENDED CHARGE. Police charged Daniel Ryan (licensee of All Nations Hotel, Rinui) with selling liquor after hours, exposing for sale, and permitting drunkenness Four visitors were also charged with being unlawfully on the premises. Air Alunlock for all parties, pleaded not guilty. Constable Drummond gave evidence of visiting the All Nations Hotel. Rinui. In the bar parlour, saw group of men. Licensee was in the act ol passing out glasses of liquor. Airs Ryan called out “Here’s Air Drum-mo---cl,” and tlie licensee withdrew the glasses into the bar. Asked the men their reason of being there and they said they had come for three chairs for the ball. They denied having been served with liquor. Saw a glass of liquor on the lloor, but all denied knowledge of it. One. SeatTo, stated be bad dinner and tea. Considered the latter was under the influence ol liquor. Could not say what was in the glasses the licensee was handling. Daniel Ryan, licensee, gave evidence that it was usual to lend chairs lor musicians at a dance. Saw the thiee men. Did not supply or open the bar to them. Told the men they could have the chairs, and they took them. They did not ask for drink and were not served. Searle engaged a bed after having dinner. The glass of liquor on the floor was at the other end of the room alongside the leg ol the table. Did not supply any liquor to these men. Was cleaning up the Ibiir at the time, after a busy day. Gave the men a chair each. Did not see the glass on a lloor until the ramstable drew attention to it.

After AY Hayhittle and James Searle had given evidence, supporting the licensee, the Alagistrate dismissed all the charges.

UNREGISTERED RIFLE

The police charged Tnomas P. Dock, with the sale of a Winchester ritic without a permit. He was convicted and fined 5s and costs 10s. CIVIL.

Tl. J. Pa mum Ltd.. (Mr Murdoch), v. Reginald .May. judgment summons £8 18s (id. Order made for payment forthwith with counsel's fee 15s (id. in default 14 days BREACH OE ORDER.

The police charged George 11. Tainui (Air Pilkington) with having procured liquor while prohibited, and be pleaded not guilty. Air Alurdocli appeared on behalf of Mrs Tainui. sear. After hearing evidence His Worship conyicted the defendant and committed him to the Rotoroa Inebriates Home for twelve months.
