In connection with tlie Electoral Boundaries' Commission decision to abolish Ashburton electorate, considerable interest attaches to the question of what will happen so far as licenses in Ashburton are concerned. The town of Ashburton, at present a “dry” town, is to he merged in the electorate of Ellesmere, a “wet” electorate. Where portions of “wet” electorates have in the past been merged in “dry” electorates the portions so absorbed have become “dry.” This happened in the case of Mount Somers and later Geraldine. In the present instance the process has been to an extent re- r versed, with the qualification that the entire “dry” electorate censes to exist. Two “wet” electorates each absorb a portion of the “dry” electorate the boundary falling between Ashburton, which goes into Ellesmere, and Tinwald. which is absorbed into the Teniuka electorate.
