N.Z. TOUR. N.Z. V. MIDDLESEX. (Australian Press Association & Sun.) I Received this day at 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 24. With their hacks to the wall the New Zealanders made a surprisingly fine recovery, thanks to McGill* and James. The former took risks, twice in one over lifting the hall close to the outtieldsmon. hut nevertheless he exhibited many polished strokes and scored fast once he was set. At 72 he hit aeioss a fast one from Tanner, anti uas howled. He made his runs at Hie rate of one a. minute and had nine buutidai ies. James' host strokes were cover drives. He eventually .sacrificed iiis wicket in trying to pull an off hall ! tout Hearne to square leg. The rest of Liu* tail halted doggedly and offered a good resistance to the end. The last five wickets added 1,74 in two hours.
With the total reaching 333. Middlesex was left witli 280 to get*. At one Stage the County men looked like Laving a hard struggle hut Stevens adopted a forcing game and scored ireelv. At the ten adjournment the total hail reached 174 for four wickets and then the veteran. Hearne. ramc in and played the professional stylist, winning the game. No changes could get rid of him and he was still undefeated when with seven wickets down the required total was reached. .Middlesex won a good and interesting game by three wickets.
Merritt howled tirelessly and *uuk Ihe batsmen up with his slow breaks, coming out with the good average of 3 for hi, hut the other howlers wore rather erratic. Cunningham in particular. again failed to get a wicket. LONDON, May 24. Bat for the dropping of Hearne* boton* lie started his score, and another had miss before he* became* set, the New Zealanders might have beaten -Middlesex. Their uphill tight is widely commended.
