STRANGE FISH. XEW YORK, May 23. Mr William Beebe, who has returned from an expedition to the coral reefs at Haiti, has reported 280 now species of fish, which an explorer, wearing a helmet with a glass front, observed at the sea bottom. A telephone attachment enabled him to dictate to stenographers aboard his schooner. He described one fish, a foot wide, which harboured upwards of 3CO smaller living fish ill its stomach, and repelled larger ones'with a poison to which the smallei ones aic immune. Another fish effects a complete change of colour in a few hours. There were observations made nightly by means of a powerful searchlight. • __ Some specimens were scooped up in nets, and others were harpooned with small darts shot- from a gun. Some fish wore necessarily dynamited.. Ah- Beebe, who was clad only in a r bathing suit, declared that lie. was never attacked, and he moved about in the utmost safety.

U.S.A. INDUSTRY. XEAY YORK. A lay 23. The Australian Industrial 'Mission spent a crowded week-end at Philadelphia. The present view is that the S Mission's report will set out the facts as disclosed, along the lines of the recent British report leaving controversial questions to the individual members to discuss. The members have individual notes, but no attempt lias been made at any time to co-ordinate the views. The employers’ representaties, in particular, are not anticipating with pleasure the preparation of the report, each feeling the strain of a long, strenuous inquiry. An incident which occurred at the Blown and Harper plant at Providence indicates the temper of the Mission While inspecting automatics, Mr Alcllines told Mr Guy that Australian industries must acquii'e these machines. Mr ciuy retorted hotly, saving; ‘Wo have them, but they are lying idle because your Unions will not work them unless each is worked by a mechanic, whereas in America one labourer can work six or more automatics.” The Mission proceeds to Washington to-morrow.
