FLOODS BACK BREAKING
NEW YORK, May 23, News from New Orleans states that if the AlcCree Levee* on the east hand of the Atchalafaya Basin holds for -ft hours, il is believed that the backbone of the flood will have been broken. The flood waters, with a 59-mile front, are sweeping slowly southward, and they are expected to reach the Gulf of Alcxico in two weeks, during , which time 16,000 people will be rendered homeless.
Air Hoover is unable to offer an estimate of the total damage. He declared that the rescue work is still vital. The health authorities are making preparations lor a battle with the typhoid and malaria, which are already setting in. The local Weather Bureau is credited hy Air Hoover with having saved countless lives, due to the accuracy of its forecasts.
The postal authorities are employing rowboats and canoes in an effort to make deliveries, which have been utterly paralysed since tlio flood started.
