CANTERBURY EDUCATION
The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Education Board was held at Christchurch on Friday last, there being present: Messrs W. ; P. ,Spencer (chairman). J. Mayo, G. \V.*'A.i:mitage, W. H.'Winsor, 1U Wild, E. H. Andrews. C. S. Thompson, IV. A. Banks,' T. Hughes, and AY. Johnson. Appointments recommended by the Appointments Committee and approved included:—Otira, Miss K. L. Chostennan, assistant mistress; Boss, Miss f. Lloyd, assistant mistress ; Burn, Mr V. Reid, sole teacher.
Leave of absence was approved in the following cases:—Blackball, Miss A. K. Gilooly: Cobden, Mr IT. R. Barrett. Resignations accepted included:— Barrytown, .Miss J. Ryull, sole teacher. (It was resolved to send a letter of appreciation in view of her long service!. Ruru, Miss IT.. O’Dnnell, sole toucher.
A letter was received from the Department declining to sanction the consolidation proposal at Kukatahi.
A. letter was received from the committee protesting against the decision Tt was resolved to send ft copy of the committee’s protest to the Department, and to point out that if the conveyance were not arranged fin additional school would be required. The Evans Creek Committee asked that a. school district he constituted. Tt was resolved to reply that in view of Ihe small number of pupils, the hoard did not see its way to comply witli the request. The Wataroa committee wrote drawing attention to the desirability of erecting a teachers’ residence m order to induce teachers to remain at the school, and it was resolved that plans ho prepared and .application made to the Department for a grant for the work.
A letter was received from the Educational Institute, suggesting that the Board should decline to give outside organisations access to school records. It was resolved to reply that the Boon! had already dealt with the matter. A letter was received from the Auckland Board, suggesting that legislation should he enacted regarding the employment of married women teachers. It was resolved to send a copy of the resolution previously adopted by the Bboard, viz., that married women would not be appointed ii their husbands were in a position to support them. The Department asked that matters for consideration should ho submitted at an early date. It was resolved that the Council he asked to consider (1) the whole question of prohaticmerships; (2) the payment of riding allowances for country school children. Mr C. R. Kirk (secretary) reported that in some 2-3 schools there had been no committee elections, while replies had not hen received from about 00 others. Those at which no election had taken place include Blue Spur, Rrinc Ray. Humphreys, Kumnra .Junction, Ngaliere, Stafford, To Kinga and Tongawai. Members were short at Ruat.apu. and there were protests at Okuru. No replies came from Arntika. Bell IT,ill, Cobden, Goldsborough, Harikari, 1 nohbniinic. Matianui, Mikonui. Stillwater, Totara Valiev, Wuitulta, AVocd-toek.
