New Orleans reports the steamer Birmingham, carrying convicts from the State Prison, was trapped in the current of a swollen stream and crashed into a pier. The men leaped to the pier and no lives were lost. Many boats hearing cargoes, for the relief of the refugees were compelled to battle against the fury of the flood. Tn numerous instances the vessels were carried beyond their destinations, while the people were left to staivo. Motor vehicles are being employed to aid in the transport, carrying hundreds of people over the water choked roads to the highlands. Arcadians who at first ignored the orders or the relief- workers are now abandoning their homes readily. St Martin s is reported to he still holding on, hut the levees may collapse at nnv moment.
