Rabbit-poisoning is now in full progress in the Kokatnhi-Koiterangi dis-» diet. Strychnine and oats is the most favoured system at present, and it is being taken well by the rabbits, with the result that substantial numbers have been poisoned. The result of Ibis years’ poisoning should assist to substantially redueo the numbers, especially in Koitcrangi district, where they have been verv plentiful of late on the riverbeds and islands.

There was a fair attendance at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening for the weekly R.K.4. euchre. After a pleasant evening's play, the prize winners proved to be: Mrs IT. Rutland Ist., Mrs .1. Wireless enthusiasts had the opportunity of heaving a London broadcast which was relayed through Holland and Sydney from 1 o’clock this morning till shortly after 7 o’clock. Hoard locally near closing hour, the hroadcast came through very strongly, hut spoken words wore not clear. Music, particularly instrumental, was clear. .Vo doubt the novelty of the broadcast would tempt many to make a special effort to listen in to the spoken word relayed from far off London.

Bv the death of Mr Hubert B. MaeWliirter, which occurred on Wednesday, says the Christchurch “Press." the Railway Department has lost a servant who was most popular in the service. Mr M’acWhirter was particularly well-known in Canterbury, having joined the Department in Christchurch. Ho was at one time stationmaster at Amberlev, and was later transferred to the District Manager's Office at Christchurch. He was again transferred, this time to Mnrtou. where he was placed in charge of the refreshment rooms. From Marten he was sent to To Kuiti. where he was stationmaster until the time of his death. The late Mr MaeWhirter was 38 years of age, and leaves a widow and a young family of four. He was a son of the late John MaeWhirter. of Goldsborougli, a former member of the Westland Conntv Council.

The death has just occurred in Melbourne of an old Hokitika resident of some years ago. in the person of Mr Albert Cnrnick. Many of the older residents of this, town will remember that he and his brother George, served their apprenticeship to the printing trade at the old “West Coast Times” office. Tn 1885 lie went to Melbourne, and soon after landing procured a situation at the Government Printing Office; where lie had just completed 41 J years’ service. He was buried in the Brighton Cemetery, his funeral being largely attended. He held a foreman position in tile office for many years. His youngest son was killed in the late war when serving with the Australian forces. Ho leaves a wife and one son to mourn his loss. Mrs Reg. Fane, of Hokitika, is a sister of the deceased, and many friends will extend their sympathy to her in her bereavement.

.Mr T. H. Coltman. of Wellington, is ill Hokitika representing the old established Life Insurance Office, the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia. It will ho remembered that Air Coltman was in Hokitika doing business for this office 20 years’ ago, and since then the business of the institution lias grown enormously. Tn 1(5 years the funds increased from £3,932,367 to £12.521,303. and the policy holders from 62,038 to 138,034. Ail accident happened to Air Paul Renton yesterday afternoon on the Grey-Rcefton road, near Arnold river bridge, in which lie very luckily escaped anv serious'injury. Tie was motoring by himself, and when passing another car, lie was forced too close to the edge of the road and the bank gave way under the wheel, the car going over the Imnk and having I f turns before it dime to a standstill. The upper sti lie tn re of the car was badly .smashed, blit later in the afternoon when the car was hauled hack to the road it was able to come on under its on n power To Hokitika. Afr Renton had a miraculous escape from injury. The driver of the other car was apparently unaware of the mishap, as he drove on his wav.
