BANK RATE.

TTMARU. May 18.

At a well-attended meeting of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to-night, a motion of protest against the action of the Associated Banks in raising their rate of interest on overdrafts, was proposed. In the course of the discussion which followed it was said that the M’unganui Chamber went on the wrong lines in the protest that it had made, and that there was another side to the matter. The consensus of opinion was that the actions of the banks in this matter was fully justified, and that it would lie productive of good in cheeking unnecessary expenditure, and m causing imports to hear a proper proportion to exports. The motion was lost, only the mover and seconder voting for.it.
