MAIN HIGHWAYS COUNCIL
NO. 12 DISTRICT. The Alain Highways Board met at Oreymouth hist evening. Present:— Messrs Watkinson (District Engineer), Powell (Btiller County), Clayton (Inangahu.o County). Higgins (Grey County), Evans (Westland County). The Chairman presented the draft of the annual report which was approved. This showed the total expenditure for the year on main highways in construction and maintenance was £64,120. The average cost of road expenditure in Buller was £(>7 to £B3 per mile. Inangahua £O6 to £7O, Grey £lO7, Westland £62 to £64. The payments to tlie Boroughs were: Brunnerton £261. Greymouth £IBO, Kuniara £6O. Hokitika £9O, Ross £l3B. The estimates for the year were presented, totalling:— Maintenance £30,592 Construction 27,129
£77.721 The Westland County Estimates for main highways wore as follows: Tcremaknu to Ross £2,920 (including £420 County contribution).
Boss to WniFio. £4.800 (including £690 County contribution). Kuniara to Arthur’s Pass £3,080 (including £420 County contribution). The following bridges were provided for in the foregoing:—Hokitika river bridge £I,OOO, small bridges, South road, £140; Taipo bridge, £4OO, bridges, Christchurch road. £1.300.
On the construction vote, the following bridges in. Westland County were provided for. Waimea Creek (Stafford) £lll2, Horseshoe Bend (Boss road) £730; Dry Creek, £1612; McCullough Creek, •x. 1000; McDonald’s Creek, £1930; Potter’s Creek, £2,250; bridges, Arthur’s. Pass road. £725; bridges on £ for £ subsidy from Westland County, Granite Creek £137, Camerons £134, Cowhide (additional) £52.
The following roads were recommended as additional main highways:— Kokntahi-Ivoiternngi (16 miles). Coastal road. Grey to Buller ; Ahaura-Haupiri; Beefton-M.nrui.i.
It was decided to support the proposal for one Main Highways Board for the Dominion and to oppose the appointment of a second representative for motor interests on the Board. The taxing of all commercial vehicles for heavy traffic fees was favoured, irrespective of weight.
