Attempts to refloat the Riverina resulted in her nose being shifted fifteen feet seawards by means of her own power and sea anchors. The tides were not so high as anticipated.
LABOUR CONFERENCE. CANBERRA, May 17
The Federal Conference of the Australian Labour Party defeated proposals that ajl expulsions and suspensions- as a result of the Labour split in New South Wales should be void. Tills mainly affects Seale, who was expelled by the Conroy Executive for defiance of its orders.
SERIOUS BUSH FIRES. MELBOURNE, Alav 17. A bush lire hacked by a strong northerly gale is advancing on a mile front on the township of Balnaring. Trainees from Flinders naval depot were despatched to the scene. Over a thousand men are fighting to save the township. The wind shows no sign of abating.
EARTHQUAKES. MELBOURNE, Alay IG. A seres of distinct earth tremor*, accompanied by loud reports, lias ticcn experienced at Seven Creeks, a locality near Euroa, during tlie past few days.
