The Kttmara Footballers’ Ball, will be held in the Kiunnra Memorial Hall on .fune 17th.

A man named Beslie Dixon sustained injuries to the spine through a log falling on him. whilst working in the bush at Blackball on Saturday. He was admitted to the Grey Hospital for treatment and is progressing satisfactorily.

A unique ceremony took place in the chape! room at Paparua Prison, Canterbury, on Wednesday evening, when four men undergoing sentences for various offences were confirmed bv Bishop West-Watsou. The eandiates were prepared for confirmation by the Rev. F. R. Raw le. Anglican chaplain to the prison, who has taken a very keen interest in the welfare of the men. A large number of prisoners attended the service and joined heartily in the singing of the hymns.

Two hart) fish have been ealight ofi a line by Mr W. Skipper, of .Moturoa. New Plymouth. They inhabit the greater ocean depths, and are rarely landed. They closely resemble .-.Mapper. and are of a light red colour. While the front of a schn.ipper's head is smooth, the harp fish has several small bonv ridges, and it has good lighting qualities among fish of its own class. The eye is totally black. When such fish arc caught a belief among fishermen is that a good season will follow.

The question of an ambulance engaged the attention of the Westland Hospital Board al its meeting last evening, following (he reading of a letter from the W estland Sub-l nion on the subject, as "a result of an accident on Cass Square the previous Saturday week. From the general discussion that followed it was gleaned that the field ambulance that the Board had previously, (which succeeded the horse ambulance, now at Bruce Bay, in readiness for any accident. or emergency case in that locality! had been disposed of owing to it proving unsuitable for the purpose and its cost of running, patients that once rode in it declining to further use it. It was then resolved to make temporary arrangements for conveyance of patients to the hospital, and satisfactory arrangements to the end of the nresent year were made with Newman’s Motors Ltd. for them to provide a car and a reasonable tariff was agreed to. That is how the matter stands at present, the Chairman of the Board staling the Board had no money at present to procure nil up-to-date ambulance that would cost in the vicinity of £OOO, hut that, if tile sum of £3OO was provided the Board would he able to secure one.
