Arthur Owen and Cornelius Patterson were before the Magistrate this morning for alleged breaches of the Gaming Act. The former was charged with keeping open and using Ins hairdresser's premises as a common gaming house and the hitler with assisting Owen to conduct the business. In addition six charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting were preferred against Owen. Accused pleaded not guilty. Alter spending three months in the Napier hospital, as the result ol injuries received when a car he had appropriated capsized, Robert John May was arrested and charged with the offence at Court to-day. The Magistrate said he would take into consideration the fact that accused had been in the hospital so long and inflated one month's hard labour. Another man who was with accused at the time, has so far avoided arrest.

Khan was fined five pounds or fourteen days for obscene language, convicted and discharge on the other count.

A COLLISION. WELLINGTON, May 16. A motor cat ancl motor cycle collided on Hutt Road, resulting in two riders on the latter being taken to the hospital where it was found their injuries were not so severe as feared. Both machines were badly damaged.

Two important conferences for the purpose of discussing-qucstions of vital interest to local bodies of the South Island will he held in Christchurch this week. The first, on Wednesday, will deal with the operation of the main Highways Act in the South Island. and also South Island Motor I ui >n have been invited to appoint delegates. It is expected that the Conference will icsiilt in a much better understanding as regards the operation, of the Act. and will enable several schemes for improvement of highways to he carried into elfect.

On Thursday a, second conference will he held. This will he concerned with future electric power supply for Canterbury and North Otago, and will he attended hv the chief Government electrical engineer and delegates from all power supply authorities in Canterbury and North' Otago. £750 CLAIM GRANTED. INVERCARGILL. May 16.

\t the Arbitration Court. Mary Francis, widow of a miner, claimed £750 compensation from Linton Coal Coy on account of the death of her husband, who was suffocated hv gas while working in the mine. The defence denied that - deceased was killed in the course of Ins employment. The regulations provide that no workman shall he in any other part of the mine other than in the part where he is working. The Court held it reasonable to infer that he went for a necessary purpose and was not guilty of misconduct in taking the route lie did. A verdict was given for fne full amount.
