According tu a return issued rocently. there is, in the accounts of the main Highways Board, a big reserve of funds, which lias hocn nccumulatifig since the inception of the Board. The return shows that, its revenue lias been £1,0G0.732 and expenditure £793. old, leaving a credt halance of £722.203. Apparently, then, the expenditure could he doubled without the Board taking any risk financially. Here wo have a country crying out for roads, hundreds of men crying out for work, and a Main Highways Board with a credit surplus of funds of approximately three-quarters of a million pounds. One would think the inference is very obvious. .Surely when there is a surplus of labour offering, all the money available should he used for road-making, in fact, no one would he surprised if the Board anticipated future revenue in order to expedite this most necessary work, and at the same time help the unemployment difficulty. The Dominion needs good roads, both for its own people., and in view of the increasing number of overseas vistors coming to our shores. The Highways Board should co-operate with the local bodies in the matter; the sooner the bettor for all concerned.
