AMERICAN CABLE NEWS

fAustralian & N.Z. Cablo Association.] AMERICAN REPLY. WASHINGTON, May 4. Tho Secretary to the U.S.A. State Department has replied to the British War Debt Note. The Secretary in his reply said:—"l have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Chilton's Note of May 2nd, in which lie has communicated to the Government of the United States the comments of t’he British Government on certain statements containing in a letter dated March 15, 1927. from the Hon Mr Mellon (Secretary to the United States Treasury) to President Hihben, of Princeton University. The Government of the United States regards the correspondence between .Mr Mellon and President Hibbon is being a purely domestic discussion and the U.S.A. Government does not desire to engage in any formal diplomatic discussion on this subject.” Following upon a conference between Mr Mellon and President Coolitlge, the Assistant Secretary of State. Mr Castle, and Mr .Mellon, issued a statement, in which Mr Mellon pointed out that his letter to President Hihben was not intended as a communication to file British Government. He said that the British figures, which differ from his, were used in an accounting sense. He adds:—‘Tn this statement I confined myself to answering the criticism of President Hibben’s letter. It seems wholly undesirable to enlarge the field of possible differences by commenting on other phases of the British Note. It seems to me, however, that the British reference to the share of the Dawes Annuities to be received by the United States is rather unfortunate, in view of the very limited claim presented by the United States as contrasted with the claims that were presented by our associates in the war.”
