A. Manion. situated ai No. <i‘j Harbour View Hoad. Northland, on the night of February 18th.. and stealing jewellery and valuables estimated to he worth close on a thousand pounds. Almost all the alleged stolen Dot, it is stated, was recovered by the police after a fivehour search of Airs Johnston’s residence, as die result of which the accused. who is at present awaiting her trial on. a. charge of being found by night iu To Aro House with the intention to commit a crime therein,- was taken into custody and charged with the offence named.

WORKER LOSES AN EYE. WELLINGTON, May 5. A youth, Fred Trethewev, residing at Nelson Street. I’clone, met with a rather painful accident during his work. He was engaged cutting some wire, when the knife slipped and gashed one of his eyes. He was removed tn the hospital immediately, hut it was found necessary to remove the e.ve. I-lis condition is reported favourable. FIRE ON HOME LINER. WELLINGTON, May 5. To-night an outbreak of fire occurred among 30(X) hags of copra in ail upi>cr cargo space on the N.Z. Shipping Co.'s shin Somerset, which was completing loading for London. The fire was extinguished before any serious damage resulted. An examination revealed two or three sacks of copra charred. The copra was loaded at Auckland, and will Ik' dried and sent on by another boat.

NATIVES AND LIQUOR. TE AWIAMUTU, May 5.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day, a native, Charles Maim, was fined £lO for drunkenness while in Charge of a motor lorry. James Smith was fined £2 for being on licensed premises after hours, and £2 for giving a false name when questioned by the police. David Edward Barnhill was fined £3 for selling liquor to a native. Kura Xgata. who also was fined £3 for selling liquor to another native, Toko Tewa, who was fined £25 for counselling Xgata to obtain liquor. Eileen Kerr, licensee of the Alpha Hotel. Kahikihi. was finiKl £lO for supplying the liquor to the natives concerned in these prosecutions.

ADORTIOXIST GETS 7 YEARS AUCKLAND. May 5.

A sentence of seven years’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr Justice Stringer in the Supreme Court, upon Hannah Matilda Dalton, married, aged 54 (Mr Singer), who was found guilty on three charges of unlawfully using instruments upon women for an illegal

purpose. Owing to the fact that the accused is paralysed in one leg. she was allowed to remain seated in the dock. OPIUM THIEVES CONVICTED. AUCKLAND, May 5. Arising out of the assault tit Mangore on April 13th. when John Boys, formerly employed as cook on the steamer Marina, was attacked and a suitcase containing four tins of illicit opium was stolen, Roy Morrison and Lawrence Xaeey were found guilty of robbery with violence in the Supreme Court to-day. Sentence was deferred until Monday. BACHELOR’S BEQUESTS. NAPIER. May 5. Under the will of the late Sinclair Johnson, a bachelor, who came to Napier from Lerwick. Shetland Islands, died there on March 23rd. last, after providing for certain annuities, there should he a sum of £IO.OOO for division amongst the following institutions: One part to the Hawke’s Bay Children’s Home, Napier; one part to the Gilbert Bain Hospital, Lerwick, Shetland Islands; two parts to Agnes Weston’s Sailors’ Rest, Portsmouth; two parts to the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh ; and fourteen parts to Dr Barnado’s Homes, London.
