I men FUGITIVE. NEW YORK, March 5. The Federal Ship, the noted liquorsmuggling vessel which was captured 1100 miles off the Pacific coast, was yesterday triumphantly escorted into San Francisco by a convov of Government ships. Her captain, Mr 'William Stone, who lias been arrested with 19 members of the crew, furiously denounced the seizure ns an act of war against the Republic of Panama, where the ship was registered. The owners of the Federal Ship were ignorant of the new law enacted at j Panama, at the request of the United States, providing that ships “ guilty of habitual smuggling or piracy against a friendly nation ” automatically forfeit their registry. The vessel was reputed to be carrying a liquor cargo worth £200.000. She also had aboard a rich fugitive from American justice who is wanted on a mtirder charge arising out of a sea battle he fought in 1925 off California against a patrol vessel,
