UNITEDS 13, EXCELSIORS 12. This match was played on Victoria Park, Greymouth, on Saturday before a fair attendance of spectators. In the first spell with the wind at their backs TJniteds had the better of the game and scored two tries. The first try was a good solo effort by tho half-back from near the twenty-five. This try was converted by Bell witli a nice kick. The second try was scored after a very fine passing run by the backs and Bell again converted, making United’s score 10. For Excelsiors T. Staines scored near the corner from a nice piece of passing. In tho second spell Uniteds were only in the picture three times during this half, and from one of these a forward dashed over near the corner flag a few minutes before time. Excelsiors scored two tries bv J. King and T. Staines, after some of the prettiest passing seen on the Park for a long time and although the kicks were very easy they were as easily missed. From a mark inside the half-way -1. King dropped a beautiful goal. The Excelsiors missed three at least sure tries, the ball being dropped by a player who only had to take and fall over to score. Although they had decidedly the better of the game the Excelsiors had to put up with defeat by one point. The winners had a far heavier team and should improve during the season. Mr Williams was referee. KANIERI v. STARS Tho season’s matches were opened on Saturday, hut the first of the senior games played on Cass Square was somewhat of a. fiasco, as the Star team came down with only ten men, and the game was not taken seriously, Kanieri ran up" a score of 2-1 points, and Stars 8 points. Tho game generally was of a poor nature and very disappointing. JUNIORS. The Excelsior IT v. Ross game, played on Cass Square proved an evenly contested one, in which victory went to Excelsiors by 12 points to 8.
